Q?

Do I need to bring my bike every day?

A.

No. You will bring your bike on the first day of camp, we will keep all of the camp bikes safely locked up in our trailers. You will need to pick up the bike on the last day of camp!

Q?

How competent of a bike rider does my kid need to be?

A.

We love creating a safe environment for kids (young and old) to become more competent riders. Learning to ride a bike on new terrain is a wonderful way to get kids to push themselves mentally as well as physically. that being said, based on which program you are enrolling in, a basic level of riding is required.

Explorer Camp

No training wheels, riders can use brakes, very basic ability to ride.

Adventure Camp

All of the above, and a very basic riding skills off road.

Extreme Camp

Same as Adventure Camp

Overnight Camp

All of the above, has basic off-road skills, and can ride standing up.

Q?

Do campers need to bring their bike?

A.

Yes! Please equip your camper with a properly tuned and sized mountain bike. Ensure the brakes are working properly, and the tires are pumped up accurately. Check that the bike shifts through all of the gears sufficiently. If a child's bike is brought to camp and is deemed unsafe, they will be outfitted with a safe Compass rental bike, your credit card on file will be charged the rental fee. Our local bike shops Singletrack Cycles in North Bend offers bike tuning services.

Compass does have a limited amount of kids rental bikes available, please call to add a rental to your booking.

Q?

Why don’t you allow campers to bring their cell phones?

A.

We expect our kids to unplug, so why can’t we? Let's be honest, sending kids to camp with a cell phone is probably more for you than them. At Compass, we create meaningful camp experiences by facilitating new relationships built on trust and communication. Valuable conversation, situational awareness, and quality bonding will happen more often without the distraction of screens.

Q?

Without their phone, how will I contact my child?

A.

Please feel free to call the Compass Shop phone number 425-318-8876. You can call or text this number if you need to reach your child, our Management and Shop team will ensure your message is passed on promptly. If you mainly want assurance that your child is having a good time, look for the post-camp email sent out daily, and ask you camper what they did that day (quick, before they fall asleep at the dinner table)!

Q?

What Should I Pack for Camp?

A.

Compass Gear for Camp

Having the right gear makes outdoor adventure fun, rewarding, and exciting. Having the wrong gear or lack of gear entirely, makes campers cold, wet, and hungry. Please go down the list and make sure you have the gear listed below. An additional comprehensive and weather appropriate list will be sent to you upon signing up. Any questions... feel free to ask.

Q?

Do your staff go through a background check?

A.

Yes, all of our staff undergo a thorough background and are required to have a clean WA State Driving Record in order to be employed.

Q?

What if it rains?

A.

Then everyone gets wet! Kids love to play in the rain (and the spare backpack we require is stocked with dry clothes). If the forecast calls for lightning or a big weather event, we will mix up our daily plans to accommodate. We will be in contact if camp is cancelled due to weather issues. Learning to switch things up as they come is something we find to be a useful tool in real life as well as in camp.

Q?

Where do I drop my kid off for camp?

A.

All camps leave out of the Preston Soccer Field parking lot. From I-90, take exit 22. Take a left at the stop sign and go over the freeway. Take a right at the T and you will see the soccer fields on your left. You'll see the Compass van in the parking lot.

Q?

What time does camp start?

A.

The camp vans drive off at 9:00am. Get there early so we can load your child's bike and gear and answer any last minute questions.

Q?

What time does camp end?

A.

Camp ends at 4:00pm sharp. Please don't be late. Your kids will be exhausted and will be looking forward to telling you all about their amazing day!

Q?

What should I pack for lunch?

A.

Go with healthy protein and carbs to keep them fueled all day - sandwich, energy bars, fruit and veggies, snacks. Consider the weather and/or season. Fruit can replenish liquids on a hot day. A container of warm soup or noodles can be a good choice on those rainy Fall days or in Winter Camp. We recommend vacuum sealed containers that are leak proof, and will keep liquids warm throughout the day. Avoid ice packs or bulky lunch boxes, as your child will be carrying it around in their backpacks all day (have you ever rode a mountain bike with a cooler in your backpack?). Note: we practice Pack It In, Pack It Out as we rarely find garbage cans in the woods.

Q?

What activities will my child be participating in?

A.

We have an amazing list of adventures planned for each day. Your child will enjoy being the first to tell you all about their activities when you pick them up. We have seasonally appropriate activities planned for each day of camp. These adventures are sure to get your child outside, exploring their limits and perpetuating growth. Some days will include water, others will include mud. We strive to create an environment where participants can challenge themselves under our Challenge by Choice concept.

This means that our staff will encourage all campers to push their limits within reason while also respecting each individuals choice not to participate.

Q?

Does your staff know first aid?

A.

Yes. Our staff members are required to keep a current First Aid and CPR certification. All of our guides are avid outdoor adventure enthusiasts and have a ton of experience with kids (and the minor cuts and scrapes that come when having fun outside). Each guide carries with them a well-stocked First Aid Kit.
